Alzheimer’s disease is a neurocognitive disease caused my memory loss and cognitive impairment. As stated in the discussion prompt: "Stem cells are undifferentiated, primitive cells with the ability both to multiply and to differentiate into specific kinds of cells. Stem cells hold the promise of allowing researchers to grow specialized cells or tissue, which could be used to treat injuries or disease (e.g., spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, strokes, burns)" (Slevin, 2010). This means stem cells are able to, in a way, morph into other cells which has been made evident through research. Stem cells are even used in situations such as injuries to attempting to improve mental impairment in Alzheimer’s patients. This could prove to be useful if it is able to improve Alzheimer’s signs and symptoms. Stem cells can provide valuable research about the disease process of Alzheimer’s and how it develops in individuals. “Stem cells have improved characteristics of self-renewal, proliferation, differentiation, and recombination” (Liu, 2020 (Links to an external site.)). They may assist in some improvement of the disease but not during the disease; as there is no cure for Alzheimer’s. Clinical trials have proven that there can be improvement in an individual going through stem cell treatment. As mentioned in the article I reviewed, there is much benefit for stem cell therapy in Alzheimer’s treatment, however, there is still much work and research to be done. Act utilitarianism could be intertwined with the debate on using stem cells for Alzheimer’s research and improvement. It states that an action is right to the extent that it increased the total happiness of the patient. Vise versa, an action is wrong to the extend that it decreases the total happiness of the patient. Happiness could be defined as advantage, benefit, good, or pleasure of the patient.

Post 2:

Stem cell research studies the properties of stem cells in order to determine their potential use for medical purposes. This form of research helps to increase the understanding of how a disease works and it generates healthy cells in order to replace affected ones (Stem Cell Research, 2022). Potential benefits of stem cell research for Alzheimer’s patients are understanding the causes of dementia to help find new cures for it. Since stem cells grow into brain cells there are likelihoods it can repair brain damage caused by neurological conditions (Alzheimer's Society's view on Stem Cell Research, 2022). It is believed that the use of stem cell research for Alzheimer’s may be able to improve overall functional recovery, replace damaged cells and improve functional memory by regenerating neurons.

I challenge my peer for stating that Alzheimer’s disease is caused by memory loss and
cognitive impairment. Alzheimer’s disease is a neurologic disorder resulting in brain cell death.
This condition results in a decline in thinking and overall cognitive functioning. However, I
agree with the peer’s argument that stem cells have the potential to help researchers develop
specialized cells or tissue tha...
