Parenting styles are defined as psychological constructs that represent the basic set of
strategies that parents employ when rearing their children. Parenting styles represent the
responses that parents give to their children. For the different stages of growth for children,
parents have to employ specific styles of parenting for them to cope with the situations
surrounding them. The temperament levels of children and the cultural beliefs and patterns of the
parents have a great impact on the parenting style that will be used. (Adeyemi, University of

There are four main categories of parenting styles that are employed by parents around
the globe. They are authoritative, authoritarian, neglectful and permissive. Each parenting style
has different characteristics and affects children differently.
Authoritative Parenting
The characteristics of authoritative parents include having an approach that focuses on
the child and their expectations for maturity are high. Authoritative parents actively try to
understand the feelings of their children and teach them to control their emotions. These parents
