Although there were many reasons behind Paul's epistle to the Romans, his chief motivation was to profess and reaffirm the doctrine of salvation through Christ. He was also seeking to settle the long-standing dispute between two major factions in Rome, "Jewish Christians" and "Gentile Christians".
