The Supreme Court is made up of nine justices who are responsible for deciding whether or not laws are in line with the U.S. Constitution. These individuals serve life-long appointments once they are nominated by the President and confirmed by the United States Senate. Below is a list of some of the most controversial decisions in the last few decades by the Supreme Court. These cases are often mentioned by politicians during campaigns because the issues are still debated, even after the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Roe V Wade case
Out of the five Supreme Court ruling, I chose Roe v. Wade and the law being challenged was on
abortion rights as it relates to privacy rights. Everyone, as guaranteed by the constitution, has the
right to privacy and that should be respected. Every citizen in America is guaranteed autonomy,
and this should not be limited by any court ruling because the constitution is the framework for
guiding other laws made by the states. The government entity involved in the case was the office
of the district attorney of the Dallas County. The district attorney Henry Wade was the one who
enforced the law on abortion in Texas that stated that abortion was only allowed in situations
when the woman’s life was in danger.
Petitioner
The petitioner in the case was Norma McCorvey who in the court documents was referred as
Jane Roe and was a resident of Texas. Roe’s argument in the case was that the Texas law
prohibited abortion with exceptions to saving the life of the mother. For Roe she was single and
wanted abortion to be performed in licensed and safe clinical conditions. Roe argued that she
could not travel to another state that had legal jurisdiction over abortion. She was pregnant when
she was appealing the case, she argued that abortion should be a choice of the mother and not
limited by the state law as it was then. It was the legal restriction on abortion that made Roe file
