At a candy store, Erika bought 3 kilograms of cinnamon red hots and 1 kilogram of gummy bears for $21.00. Meanwhile, Irene bought 3 kilograms of cinnamon red hots and 3 kilograms of gummy bears for $39.00. What is the cost of one kilogram of each type of candy?

Apr 13th, 2015

3c + 1g = 21 (c = number of kilograms of cinnamon red hots and g = number of kilograms of gummy bears

3c + 3g = 39

Subtract bottom equation from top

3c + 1g = 21

- 3c - 3g = - 39

-2g = -18

-2g/-2 = -18/2

g = 9, 1 kg of gummy bears = $9

Substitute $9 in for "g" in one of the equations to solve for c

3c + 1(9) = 21

3c + 9 = 21

3c = 21 - 9

3c = 12

c = 4, 1 kg of cinnamon red hots = $4
