With that said, there is a general recognition by practitioners and scholars alike that change is difficult. It requires personal and community support. As stated in the National Association of Social Work (NASW) Code of Ethics, “Social workers seek to enhance clients’ capacity and opportunity to change and to address their own needs.” The NASW further recognizes that relationships are an important vehicle for affecting change (NASW Code of Ethics, 2017).The stages of change model, part of the trans-theoretical model of behavioral change developed by James Prochaska and Carlo Di Clemente in the 1970s, assess an individual’s readiness to create behavioral change (Prochaska & DiClemente, 2005). This model is used in social work to support clients who have various levels of awareness, preparedness, and ability to create personal change. Additionally, Zastrow (2019) highlights the importance of using theoretical concepts as a lens through which we analyze problems and create planned change as we help group members address various issues and challenges.
