Running head: CHAPTER SEVEN AND EIGHT Chapter Seven and Eight Student’s Name Institution Date Submitted 1 CHAPTERS SEVEN AND EIGHT, 2 Chapter Seven Noah creatively and unusually commented about his mother and said, “It was just another way in which she was a rebel, refusing to conform to ideas about what black people did and didn’t do” (Noah, 2016). First, the sentence is creative in that it brings the idea that her mother had a series of ways of rebelling against the ideas of black people. The sentence lifts the reader’s curiosity guessing the other ways the mother was rebellious. It uses the escalation style of narrative to show that he knew her mother was rebellious in many ways. The sentence ushers the reader to the narrative and theme of rebellion from a black woman within her society. Secondly, it is creative in using an accumulation style of writing. Noah introduces the sentence by mentioning that his mother was rebellious. He then explains why he thought the mother was rebellious, citing her failure to conform to the black people's ideas. Lastly, the author makes an unexpected resolution about her mother by referring to her as rebellious (Noah, 2016). Ironically, he viewed her mother as rebellious, yet he remained very obedient to her. The sentence reveals that all people do not always acknowledge social ideas within a given society. Despite Noah's mother is black, she did not entirely follow all the ideas black people had on what they could do and what they could not do (Noah, 2016). People expect rebellion to occur when society is made up of a superior group that forces others to do things they do not want. The black people's society is portrayed to contain some questionable ideas even by its people. It leaves the reader questioning why there would be ideas that are not cruel to some people. The sentence brings social understanding about black people's values. The sentence is preceded by indicating that the author's mother had brought cats to their home. Surprisingly, the black people did not expect people to keep cats, especially black ones. This chapter narrates the cultural differences among people. Although cats are pet animals, it is surprising that some social CHAPTERS SEVEN AND EIGHT, 3 ideas may be against keeping a specific type. The author narrates how social ideas dictated the life of everyone until a woman decided to challenge them (Noah, 2016). It demonstrates a social difference where black people are depicted as having social restrictions different from what the author has witnessed in a different social setting. It is expected that people should have the freedom to keep any pets in their homes without being restricted by some social ideas. Chapter Eight The sentence “You spend time with people, you observe them and interact with them, and you come to know them—and that is what apartheid stole from us: time” is a creative piece from the author. He uses the sentence to explain the importance of interacting with people. Using the accumulation style, the author narrates the important things in forming relationships with people who are close and matter to us. He identifies spending time, observing, and interacting with them. The sentence is well-written, using repetition to emphasize the most critical aspects of getting to know people who matter to you in life the most. In the commentary, the author epitomizes time as the most aspect of knowing important people to us. However, the author creatively narrates how the apartheid denied children, parents, and many other people the opportunity to have time and get to know each other. The sentence creatively summarizes all the problems apartheid brought to family set-ups, especially where biracial families are involved (Noah, 2016). The sentence provides the author’s commentary on the conditions of life during the apartheid period. Separation and denial of interactions between people of different races was the main problem that characterized the apartheid era. Using the commentary, the author reminds people about what society expects for relationships to grow. However, the apartheid period unusually denied society at its basic level – family – the opportunity to spend time together, interact CHAPTERS SEVEN AND EIGHT, 4 and know each other. This commentary demonstrates the author’s frustrations and those of others in society during the apartheid (Noah, 2016). The sentence plays a key role in showing the difficulties many people had due to racial discrimination. It is unusual how the father isolated himself from the author’s life (Noah, 2016). Despite that the condition of life created by the apartheid was unusual, the author does not indicate any attempts the father made to find him. Despite that the author felt that his father was proud of him, his disappearance from his life is very confusing. It shows how apartheid had impacted society such that things that people could get used to things that were not usual in their life. The author seems to blame the apartheid for the inadequate time he could spend with his father as a teenager and even in his young adulthood. His commentary about apartheid stealing their interactions with their close family members symbolizes the hidden sadness in the hearts of many people who had gone through it. It is an expression that summarizes the experiences people went through due to the unimagined racial discrimination in their own country. The impact on society continued to be experienced even after the apartheid ended. CHAPTERS SEVEN AND EIGHT, 5 Reference Noah, T. (2016). Born a Crime: Stories from a South African childhood.
