Difference between ascribed status and achieved status
Status if often used in sociology to define one’s position in the social setting (Kendall, 2016). For
status, they change from one time to another. The two types of status are ascribed and achieved
status. For achieved status it is acquired through merit; that is the position is chosen or earned,
and it is a reflection of one’s abilities, efforts, and skills. For instance being a professional
swimmer is an example of achieved status. Other examples include being a criminal, lawyer or a
professor.
Ascribed status goes beyond the control of the individual. The status is not earned, but instead, it
is acquired at birth, and an individual does not have control over it (Kendall, 2016). An instance
is a race which cannot be changed, and one does not have the option to choose at birth because it
comes automatically. For children, they have ascribed status because in most situations decisions
are made by the adults (Boyd & Bee, 2014). For children, they can be homeless because they do
not have a choice in life as this is a consequence of their parent’s actions.
Status set
Social status is an array of social positions that one person holds in the society. For me I belong
to a family as a daughter, I am a student, I also work at MacDonald’s during the weekend, I am a
professional swimmer, and I am an active Christian. As a daughter my parents expect me to
respect them. At MacDonald’s I am a worker with duties which the manager expects me to do.
As a professional swimmer, I have to work hard so that I continue retaining my title. I also go to

the church where my fellow Christians expect me to be an active Christian and represent Christ’s
teachings. As a student my professor expects me to focus on my studies and earn a degree.
Difference between role conflict and role strain
Role conflict occurs when a person has to face pressure that comes with playing multiple roles
by having multiple statuses in their personal life (Kendall, 2016). The pressure occurs in trying
to balance all the roles at once. In some instances, the roles may be contr...
