ABSTRACT
Adoption rates have increased over the years. Adopting a child in the United States has
become simplified by passage of laws such as Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA) and the
Adoption Promotion Act of 2003 (APA). Adoption provides children with stability and the
chance to escape the detrimental effects that come with living in several foster homes. Couples
have several reasons for choosing to adopt children, with majority resolving to it after attempts
of biological parenting. For anyone choosing to adopt children, they need to meet certain
requirements that will guarantee a child’s well-being. Once such standards are met, the adoptive
process can be followed through. Despite the fact that adoption provides children with a great
opportunity for stability, some children could encounter port-adoption problems in an attempt to
adapt into new families.

Heterosexual couples could also adopt children for purposes of providing a home for the
children, or due to previous attachment to the children.
For lesbian and gay couples, biogenetic kinship usually does not come at the top of their
