Short Stories and a Television Episode
1) Show you a few examples of popular culture texts so that you can start thinking ahead towards the types of popular culture texts you might want to write about for your final research essay.
2) Get you into the practice of pre-writing about texts by having you briefly write down some of your ideas on each reading.
3) Prepare you to write your first essay next week.
Instructions:
Below are three short stories and an episode from the original Twilight Zone television series. I am asking you to read these stories and watch the television episode and to write a 1/2 page on EACH of them, for a total of two pages of writing. Your writing should be double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font.
For the writing, I do NOT want a summary of the narratives. Instead, I want you to write what you thought about them.
For this assignment, you do not need to worry about MLA formatting, a Works Cited page, or even grammar or spelling. Focus on your ideas. As long as you write the full amount, and have not plagiarized from online sources, you will earn full credit for the assignment.

The Ones Who Stay and Fight
My initial thought about this narrative was about developing a just and inclusive society
from Um-Helat's framework, including tackling climate injustices and setting the correct
example for the young generation. It was my hope that the story focuses on addressing climatic
inequalities; however, it does not climate change. Future generations will be more affected by
climate change than today. Therefore, the narrative should contrast loneliness and rejection with
caring for the future. The brief narrative should teach that adults should be role models for young
people. People can only have a just society if they avoid violence, as children learn it when
young, and it's impossible to stop them. To establish a just and inclusive environment, people
must maintain their culture because learning a new one may make them forget their roots. UmHelat forbade...
