Hirschi's Control Theory
The theory examines the relationship between social bonds to crime. Hirschi argues that
human beings are inherently motivated to engage in crime. However, certain social bonds and
their connection to social institutions might determine whether or not they resort to criminal
activities (Burke et al., 2019). In this case, social institutions include family, marriage, schools,
etc. If the social institutions are weak, they are likely to exert less social control on individuals.
According to Hirschi, individuals are likely to commit crimes if their attachment to societal
norms and institutions is weak. The theory identifies four primary elements concerned with
crime; attachment to the community, commitment to societal goals, involvement in conventional

friends tend to have high stakes in such relationships. As a result, they find little incentive to
engage in crime because they risk damaging the social bonds they cherish and have significantly
invested in.
The third element, involvement, is closely related to commitment. Involvement refers to
the amount of time an individual invests in positive social activities (Burke et al., 2019).
According to Hirschi, time and energy share an intricate relationship. ...
