Important Learning Theories to Advanced Practice Nurses
Advanced practice nurses participate in among other roles, educating patients as well as
their families to improve care outcomes. Patient education empowers the patients by informing
them about what they should know to prevent health issues and improve recovery. Patient
education may cover issues like medication administration, hygiene, diet, and other important
issues that may affect their outcomes. Education primarily aims to enable patients to change their
behaviors. The use of appropriate learning theories is therefore important to enable the success of
patient education by APNs. Three very important theories to APNs include the behaviorist,
cognitive and social learning theories.
The behaviorist learning theory posits that learning happens because of the interaction
