STAGE   BASIC CONFLICT   EXPLANATION Infancy   Trust vs. mistrust   Infants must form loving relationship with caregiver or they will develop mistrust. Toddler   Autonomy vs. shame and doubt   The child learns to do things for themselves like walk, talk, etc.  If the child does not, he/she will feel shame and doubt. Pre-schooler   Initiative vs. guilt   Pre-schoolers get an idea and follow through with it.  If a child is punished too forcefully or made to feel that she was "bad" when she followed through on an idea, then the child will feel guilt about trying to do anything. School –aged Industry vs. inferiority   Must feel that they are good at something or will feel like a failure and develop a sense of inferiority. Adolescent   Identity vs. role confusion   Adolescents have to discover their own identity or they will always follow the crowd. Young adult   Intimacy vs. isolation Young adults are able to open themselves up to others or suffer feelings of isolation. Middle adult   Generativity vs. stagnation   Middle adults need to be open to new ideas of young generation or they will be stuck in the “good old days”. Senior adults   Ego identity vs. despair   Senior adults feel ok about life and accomplishment or they complain and find no happiness in later years. You are interviewing for a job that you really want, and things seem to be going very well in your conversation with the interviewer. In the next stage of the interview, you are asked if you would be willing to undergo a preliminary drug test, an integrity test and a clinical personality test prior to being considered for employment. An integrity test obviously seeks to determine ones honesty, trustworthiness, loyalty, etc., as a future employee. A clinical personality test seeks to determine whether a person is likely to commit theft, use drugs or turn violent in the workplace. You are also told that should you be hired you will be subject to random drug testing throughout your employment. Given the kind of career/workplace you would like to be in would you agree to these tests? What would a Utilitarian advise you to do? OK, drug test maybe, because it’s become pretty standard, but would you agree to take the integrity and clinical personality tests?Is it fair or even legal for an employer not to give you a job because a test indicates you may be likely to commit theft, use drugs or turn violent in the future?Post your thoughts and comments to all the above questions.
