You observe a spectroscopic eclipsing binary star system and measure the velocities of the two stars orbiting around their center of mass to be v1 = 10 km s-1 and v2 = 30 km s-1 and the period of this system to be 2.5 years. what are the masses of the two stars in this binary system?

r = r1+r2

r1 = m2/(m1+m2) r, r2 = m1/(m1+m2) r

 F = Gm1m2/r^2 = m1v1^2/r1 = m1*(m1+m2)/m2 *v1^2/r

T = 2pi*r1/V1 = 2pi*m2/[(m1+m2)V1]
