James and Pat are driving a distance of 310 miles. James averages 5 miles faster than Pat. James drives 130 miles of the trip, Pat drives the rest. If the total time of the trip is 5 hours, find the rate of each driver.

Oct 21st, 2017

let james' rate be x, then Pat's rate is x-5,

then we have 130/x +(310-130)/(x-5) = 5

130/x +180/(x-5) = 5

solve this we have x = 65 mph

pat's rate is 60 mph
