Introduction

Southwest Airlines began its operations in the year 1969, by then called Air Southwest
Company, by Texas legal counselor Herb Kelleher and businessman Rollin King (Gittell, 2003).
The organization started by offering its services in San Antonio Texas, Dallas, and Houston, with
regular, decently valued flights. The airline began as a little Texas carrier and has now grown to
end up becoming clearly one of the greatest airlines in the United States. Presently, the airline
company flies more than 65 million passengers on a yearly basis to 59 different destinations all
throughout the country. Compared with its adversaries, the airline company's rates are a bit
lower. Southwest's administration of human resource matters is used as a competitive strategy to
fabricate an advantageous workforce to control cost. Through this method, the organization can
offer lower prices (Borenstein & Rose, 2014). Their intention is to ingrain a feeling of fun in
Southwest's customers in addition to its agents.

Southwest Airlines was initially incorporated to serve three urban areas in Texas under
the name Air Southwest on March 15th, 1967 (Gittell, 2003). As per a frequently referred to
story, King described the idea to Kelleher over supper by drawing a triangle which symbolized
the courses on a napkin made of paper. Herb Kelleher, Southwest Airlines founder, studied
California-based Pacific Southwest Airlines closely and utilized a significant number of the
aircraft's ideas to shape Southwest's corporate culture, and even on earlier flights utilized the
same "Long Legs and Short Nights" theme for attendants who were on board the Southwest
Airlines flights (Gittell, 2003). The first flight attendants that worked for the company were
picked by a council of people that included the same individual who had chosen the female
attendants for Hugh Hefner's Playboy plane. The selection led to a group of female flight
