Learning objectives: • Learn some of the details of transmission, infection, and recovery from a single disease • Continue learning to read and understand scientific literature • Learn to search for scientific literature using a scientific literature index Step 1: Begin here: http://healthmap.org. Browse around a bit to get familiar with the site. • From the main page, find the Search button at the top left: • From the Location tab, select a location that begins with the same letter as your last name (for me, Kevin Turner, I could select from Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, The Bahamas, or any other country that begins with T). • From the Species tab, select “Humans” • From the Date tab, select “past month” • Click the submit search button: • Take a look at the map and click on some of the dots just to see a few of the disease outbreaks happening around the country • Click the List View button at the top right: , then be sure to Display All Results Step 2: Start your paper by identifying the country you’re using, and list all human diseases from your chosen country. (If there is only a single disease reported in the last month, include a note to indicate this fact. If there were no diseases in the last month, select a new country.) Identify which disease you’re focusing your paper on. Step 3: Select from among the diseases listed (1), and follow one of the links to the “Summary” source, and view the full article (2): Step 4: In 1-2 sentences, summarize the information from the article Identify the sources of information from the article (this is not a formal citation). This will be something like the health minister of the country, an agency like the Centers for Disease Control, a hospital, or other similar person or group. Step 5: Use the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention websites (www.who.int and www.cdc.gov) to search for your disease. Locate information sheets or fact sheets from either source. In your paper, describe the disease in a few bullet points to include: • What kind of organism causes the disease? (e.g. virus, bacteria, roundworm, etc.) • How is it transmitted between people? (e.g. fluid contact, mosquito vector, etc.) • What are the symptoms? • What are the treatments? • One additional bit of information you find interesting Step 6: See Blackboard to watch the two presentations from WSU Librarian, Betty Galbraith about how to search for scientific literature using scholarly databases, and how to determine if an article is peer-reviewed. These are both very large files, which will take a while to download. Step 7: Using PubMed, BIOSIS, Web of Science, Google Scholar, or any other scholarly database of your choice, search for and select 3 scientific articles about your disease. All three must be from peer-reviewed journals (again, you can review instructions on Blackboard about searching for scientific literature and verifying peer-review). For each of the three articles, provide the following: • Formal citation for the article. Use the format described here: libraries.wsu.edu/quickguides/sssa • A 1-paragraph description of the article and its findings Step 8: Write a 1-2 paragraph summary of your understanding of the disease, based on your WHO/CDC/research article readings. Example: (Last name beginning with T) Location: Thailand Diseases: 1. Bite 2. Cholera 3. Dengue – I’m selecting this disease Article summary: There have been 200 deaths and almost 64,000 infections of dengue fever in Thailand in the last 6 months. The monsoons coming next month are expected to increase the number of cases, so the government will begin mosquito spraying and will be fining people who do not remove mosquito breeding grounds from their properties. Article source: Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne WHO/CDC summary: • Dengue is a viral disease • Transmitted between people by mosquitoes • Symptoms include… • Treatments include… • Interesting tidbit… Citation 1… Summary of article 1… Citation 2… Summary of article 2… Citation 3… Summary of article 3… Summary of my understanding of this disease…

The location used in this paper is Malbork, Poland. There is only one disease that was
reported in the country in the last one month, Salmonella. It is the focus of this paper in the
subsequent sections. The other one has not been classified yet.
The article on the disease identifies the strand of Salmonella that causes Salmonella
enteritidis which was found in eggs from the country. The causes were lack of proper controls at
the rearing site, and the eggs had already been exported by the time the issue was detected,
affecting European countries such as France, and the United Kingdom (Whitworth).
The sources of information from the article are; Fermy Drobiu Wozniak (the poultry farm),
and the European Centre for Disease Control.

Organism that causes the disease: bacteria by the name Salmonella

Transmission: Via food animals, and their products such as through eggs, in this case.
Between humans, it can be transmitted via contact with fecal matter, or orally. Pets, and
wild animals could also transmit the disease if a human comes in contact with fluids, or
fecal matter from infected ones.

Symptoms: fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

Surname 2

Treatments: Antimicrobial therapy, electrolyte displacement, and use of antibacterial,
depending on the severity of the case, and whether the bacterial strains are resistant, or
not.

Interesting information: In several instances, the infections by Salmonella are not fatal. In
fact, people heal after showing the symptoms without the need for treatment.
