Part II Essay Section - Worth 60 pts Please write an essay that answers ONE of the following questions. A strong essay will be one that demonstrates command of the course material by having a response that is not too general or vague (always strive to give concrete details and examples for general points). When applicable, the incorporation of discussion of primary sources in responses will also be beneficial. 1. Please discuss how the vast majority of people in the Paleolithic period structured their societies and acquired resources (e.g. food). Considering at least TWO cultural zones that we have examined in the course (e.g. Mesopotamia, Egypt, South Asia, and China), why and how did some cultures become Neolithic societies, and what role did religion often have in explaining/justifying the new types of social structures and social organizations that developed in these societies? 2. Please discuss the key similarities and differences between territorial states and empires in the ancient or classical periods of human history. Why and how did early empires emerge (please discuss at least TWO, like the Assyrian, Chinese, Mauryan/Gupta, Persian, Hellenistic/Macedonian, or Roman empires), and how did the specific characteristics of these empires help create cultural connections and new cultural practices/beliefs in the world? Bonus Question (write answer on this sheet) (2 pts) What does the term “anachronism” mean, and what danger does it pose to historians when they examine and study the past? Don't leave e questions blank

The Structure of Paleolithic and How They Acquired Resources
Paleolithic is also called the Old Stone Age, however, the Paleolithic era generally entails
the duration in human history where foraging, fishing, and hunting were the main sources of
acquiring food. During the period human beings had not yet started domesticating animals and
agriculture. Moreover, as they were hunters and gatherers they could not dwell much on
agricultural practices to produce food knowingly as their diets were not independent on the
variations of the natural ecosystem. In spite of not engaging in domestication of animals nor
agriculture, they still survived in using other methods of acquiring resources like food
The old stage people were majorly hunters and gatherers, fishermen and foraging. They
had not invented the art of growing crops and rearing of animals. So during this period they
majorly hunted wild animals in the fields for food which was so tiring and at the same time
gathered wild fruits which they also ate. At times they could go fishing in case they did not get
something from hunting or to change diet from the red meat to white meat as then this provided
an opportunity to choose from a variety of foods around (Mittnik, Wang, Svoboda, and Krause,
2016)
During around 11000 years ago is when they started to develop tools to make their lives
more comfortable in the area of residence. Moreover, the tools could be used in fishing so as to
make catching of fish more efficient and in case of hunting it is done in a more easy way as one
only need to time the animal and strike them using the weapons developed. Thus, making those
weapons not only provided security but also made their lives comfortable (Carmignani, Moncel,
Fernandes, and Wilson, 2017).
Study of human reveals that human was also a sociocultural being as they also embraced
some cultures. Paleolithic humans lived in caves as thus being named cavemen and their major

concern was how to acquire their next meal after getting the current. Moreover, they also
performed some rituals when they lose one of their loved ones and a system of religious belief as
shown in archaeological sites of Europe and South Asia. Also a burial site in Shanidar Cave in
the current day northeastern Iraq reveals the same (Mittnik, Wang, Svoboda, and Krause, 2016)
They lived in small groups where marrying was only allowed outside the small grouping
that lived together. Hence bringing order in the groupings. Ho...
