One of the biggest challenges in defining religion is that there are many sources and
definitions of religion. Some definitions support Buddhist ideals, while others do not. Religion
can be defined in many ways, some of which include having faith in a higher power and
practicing certain morals, tenets, or rites. Moreover, religion entails a set of moral guidelines, a
shared understanding of an entity, faith in the supernatural, and the drive to improve one's
character. As a result of broadening the definitions, I perceive that Buddhism can be observed in
the context of religion.
Metaphysical Concept of Reality
The first reason why Buddhism is a religion is that Buddha indeed talked about
metaphysical aspects of reality that are normally connected with religion. Even though the
Buddha repeatedly emphasized that the teachings were not as crucial as the practice, he still
referred to them. Most people would consider the Buddha's teachings on the afterlife and many
levels of existence to be the most "religious" parts of Buddhism. Many of the Buddha's sermons
discuss the possibility of rebirth in one of the Thirty-One Realms of Existence after death and
have references to supernatural beings and the other Realms. 1 In the Buddhist concept of
