A plane flies 3000 miles across Asia in 6 hours flying with the wind. Against the wind, the same trip takes 7.5 hours. Find the speed of the plane in still air and the speed of the wind.

Let P = speed of plane in still air

Let W = speed of wind

Then,

P + W = distance/time = 3000/6 = 500 mph

P - W = distance/time = 3000/7.5 = 400 mph

So,

P + W  + (P - W) = 500 + 400

2P = 900

P = 450 mph

P + W = 500

W = 500 - P

W = 500 - 450

W = 50 mph
