Introduction
In the short story A & P, irony, foreshadowing and symbolism have been used to
establish the theme of ‘the power of desire’. The short story is A & P and the author is John
Updike. The story revolves around a young man who made a wrong decision regarding standing
up for strangers he did not know and quitting his job as an expression of his dissatisfaction with
how the customers were treated. However, his efforts and valor have gone to waste since the
girls did not realize what he had done, and he ends up losing both the girls and his job.
The power of desire
The power of desire is a theme that stands out in this Updike’s story. This theme is seen
from the first moment that the girls make their way into the store. As soon as they walk in, the
gaze of the men in the store shifts to them and locks there, following them all around the store.
The girls are aware of the gazes they have attracted and thus act in a way that seems not to
acknowledge those looking at them thus remaining in a position where they have power over the
men since they are inspiring a desire that they are...
