Description

Part 1

Chemtob, Nomura, and Abramovitz's 2008 article, "Impact of Conjoined Exposure to the World Trade Center Attacks and to Other Traumatic Events on the Behavioral Problems of Preschool Children," from Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, volume 162, issue 2, pages 126–133.

  • Carey's 2008 article, "Study Finds Prior Trauma Raised Children's 9/11 Risk," from the February 5, 2008, issue of The New York Times.
  • Think about the differences you found between the two articles:

    • How do the styles differ?
    • Is one more reliable than the other?
    • How does each present information and data?
    • Who are the authors or sponsoring organizations of the articles?
    • Who is the intended audience for each article?

In your discussion, complete the following:

    • Identify the scholarly article and the popular media article.
    • Describe the similarities and the differences you find between the two articles.
    • Describe how each presents information and data. Is one more accurate than the other?
    • Use APA (6th edition) style and formatting for citations for each article.

    Part 2

    Part 1

Select an informal experiment from A or B below:

    • A: Karl wants to determine whether adding a gas treatment to his full gas tank really does help increase the number of miles to the gallon his car gets. He suspects it does help but wants to test it to be sure he is getting his money's worth for the treatment. He decides that for one month, he will track his gas mileage without the treatment. He records his gas mileage for the month. The next month, he adds the treatment each time he fills his tank. He records his gas mileage for the month and compares the mileage of the two months.
    • B: Carolyn is frustrated that getting her third-grader son, Jacob, to complete his homework after school results in a daily argument. She wants to find a strategy that will reduce the struggle. She has always allowed him to watch TV or play for an hour before beginning his homework. She thinks that maybe having him complete the work before watching TV or playing will have better results. She decides to alternate the schedule for one month. During Weeks 1 and 3, she has Jacob complete his homework before playing and records the amount of time it takes him to get started on his homework. During Weeks 2 and 4, she switches to the former routine of allowing an hour of play time before beginning homework. She records the amount of time it takes him to get started on his homework. She compares the total times for the two approaches.

For the informal experiment you selected from above, in full sentences describe each of the following:

    • Hypothesis.
    • Independent variable.
    • Dependent variable.
    • Possible extraneous variable.

    Part 2

Think of an experiment you have conducted or might like to conduct. Describe your informal experiment, and then in full sentences describe each of the following:

    • Hypothesis.
    • Independent variable.
    • Dependent variable.
    • Possible extraneous variable.

    Part 1:
    Style

Style in writing, can be described as a way of putting together words and sentences to suit a
specific audience or convey a specific message in a specific manner. There are some differences
in style between the articles written by Chemtob, Nomura, and Abramovitz in 2008 about impact
of attacks to preschoolers, and the one written by Carey in 2008 about Trauma to children who
experienced 9/11 attack. Chemtob, Nomura, and Abramovitz's is more precise in its choice of
words with the use of active verbs. It is written in report form where research was done and
recommendations made to improve the situations of the findings. It is written in the first and
third persons. On the other hand, Carey's article is written in the third person only. It is more of
analytical and bases on secondary information from other written materials. Words are not
precisely chosen as it analyzes the study findings of Traumatized children who experienced the
attack. Therefore, it differs with the former article above in style by wor...
