Communication Styles
There are varying communication styles that are different for both men and women. There
is need to be aware of the evolving nature of communication styles and how they are shaped by
circumstances (Merchant, 2012). Men’s communication style is more oriented to problem solving
unlike women’s which builds on creating social cohesion. In this paper, we will be looking at two
communication styles that men will benefit from or might not be receptive to and give a summary
of at least two reasons why each communication style is either acceptable or non-acceptable to this
population.
Attentive listening is one of the major communication styles that men can benefit from
since it is an important step to of active listening (Henley & Kramarae, 2001). Men are always
thought to be passive and non-attentive which results to poor communication in relationships and
marriages. By becoming attentive listeners, they are able to master the art of focusing on the
speaker and removing all forms of destructive thoughts from their head so as to be able to capture
every detail of the conversation.
Non-judging is also a combination style that will benefit men since they will be required
to respond without accusation or criticism (Tannen, 1994). Thus, knowing one’s triggers is crucial
in enabling them to use less judgmental communication. Men will be able to establish a balancing
act between their emotions and also being mindful of how they behave. This will be very beneficial
to how they foster relationships with other people.
Men will not be receptive to authoritarian language this is because it’s a form of
communication that expects or favors blind submission and does not allow personal freedom. This

type of communication is belittling to men and their ego would not allow them to obey rules blindly
and thus, more often than not they would end up rebelling to this form of communication.
