Introduction

Crime refers to the commitment of an illegal act. In order to curb crime, it is important to
understand the reasons that influence individuals to participate in criminal activities. Different
theories, psychological, social and biological, have been formulated to explain the involvement
of individuals in different criminal activities. Some theories involve the external environment of
the individual including the impact that family and the society has on an individual’s behavior
while others deal with the internal factors that influence the individual’s behavior (Lilly, Cullen,
& Ball, 2010). The different proponents of the theories tried to explain criminal activities.
However, some theories have been eroded with time and replaced with more substantive
theories.
Biological Theories
The theory of crime was formulated by Cesare Lombroso. The crime is founded on the
belief that some individuals were born being criminals or rather their genetic makeup dictates
that they need to commit a crime. The theory consists of other branches including physiological,
biochemical and genetic factors that might cause an individual to commit a crime (Burke, 2013).
