Defining justice
Justice refers to a concern for peace and a genuine respect for people. Retribution is the
belief that offenders should be punished by inflicting the same amount of pain on the offender as
was inflicted on the victim. Rehabilitation is the belief that social, spiritual, and biological
influences should be addressed for each offender to make him or her a productive member of
society (Raynor, & Robinson, 2009).
What are three specific differences between the arguments for rehabilitation and
retribution?
Rehabilitation is aimed at saving the offender. The idea brought here has the belief that
the state has to make sure that the guilty persons are helped to meet the standards that it has set.
This means that the state is oblique to make the offender a better person considering that in most
cases the individuals are the less fortunate persons who due to the condition they end up leading
a life of crime. The victim is not ignored but rather freed from the burden of being victimized by
the crime. The society is as well promoted and hence becomes a safe place to live. However,
retribution saves to condemn the actions of the offender. It is essential to make the offender
know that the law has censured what they have committed as it is wrong. The main aim of
condemning is to make the guilty person realize that they have done wrong to others and as a
result, they deserve to be punished for their action. The offender has to be punished to show that
the justice system pays a sense of seriousness on the law and rules that it has put in place should
one breach them (Mani, 2002). By condemning the actions, the victim is made to feel that the
system acknowledges the wrong that the offender has done.
