Description

Vertebral Column

Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research about bone, joints, and vertebrae. Based on your research and understanding, respond to the following:

  • Analyze the bone markings of the vertebrae and distinguish among the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae.
  • Evaluate the six diarthrotic joints including the movement seen in each joint and provide examples of each.
  • Evaluate synarthrotic, amphiarthrotic, and diarthrotic joints detailing the type of movement and location of each. Provide several examples for each joint.
  • Categorize three different joints found within the vertebrae, including the bone markings of each bone and the movements produced by those joints

There are several bone markings of the vertebrae. They include odontoid processes (dens)
which give room for rotation of the head. This den is found in the axis. The other one is the
vertebral foramen that is a canal through which spinal cord passes. This is found in major
vertebrae (lumbar, thoracic and cervical). Body is also a bone marking that forms the widest part
of a vertebra. They are found in the three major vertebrae. Transverse processes are projections
on the vertebra that provides room for attachment of muscles. Lamina joins transverse processes
to spinous processes on each side of a vertebra. While the pedicle joins the body to these
transverse processes (Dash, Pakray, & Gelbukh, 2016).
Vertebral column comprises of 26 vertebrae of which 7 are cervical. They are located
around the neck. They support the head and they are fragile. Their naming starts from the
location from the head downwards i.e. C1-C7.they have short transverse processes and broad
vertebrae foramen. On the other hand, thoracic vertebrae are 12 in number. They help form the
rib cage that protects delicate internal organs like the heart and lungs. They have alternating
spinous processes and long transverse processes (Dash, Pakray, & Gelbukh, 2016). Their
function is to support the upper skeleton and provide a room for spinal cord passage. Lumbar
vertebrae are located in the abdomen between the thorax and the hips. There are 5 lumbar
vertebra...
