Let S be a set. If A, B, and C are subsets of S, what does it mean to say that they partition S?

If A,B and C are subsets of S and if we we say that they partition S, Then it means that they are the parts of the S or They are derived from S.

For example : -

Let  S = {1,2,3,4,5,6}

And its subsets are (say)

A = {1,2}       B {1,2,3,4,5}         C = {1,2,3,6}

AS we can see that the subsets are derived from S

Or

They partition S.
