The Market and Equality: She Said, He said
These dueling documents are about the market and equality of two opinions, a Frances
Wright and Alexis de Tocqueville. They were written at the beginning of the 1800s during their
first visit to America. They talk about the concept of equality and the people's behavior in the
United States.
Frances Wright wrote the first document; a Scotswoman would later be an advocate in
America of slaves, workers, and women. She observed that Americans not only worry about life

but also about caring for the American country. That is due to everyone is to be considered
legislature and a politician, so they have become engaged in the care of the state. They each are
involved in inspecting its operations, balancing its accounts, guarding its authority, and
determining the best interest, all while engaging in the activities of ordinary life.
Frances Wright was a Scottish-born writer, and later she became an advocate for slaves,

success in the quickest way possible, which ensures the stress. Not only are they looking for the
shortest route, but they also hold tight to their status until something better comes along.
Unsettles and indecisive, continually making changes. When not pursuing a better life, one takes
place in politics.
In her writings, she mentions the division of classes. It seems contradictory to talk about
equality involving the division of social classes at the same time. The higher class was for the
ones who owned wealth. They could invest in land or build factories and organize banks, which

meant inequality for the rest of the population. In her positive point of view, Wright argues that
America was fortunate to have the virtue that was enough to eliminate introduction of hereditary
honors (Davidson, 268). Nevertheless, there are ma...
