4+6 = 10, leave the 0 and carry the 1 (0 is in the ones column)
1 (carried) + 9 + 3 = 13, leave the 3, carry the 1 (3 is in the 10s column)
1 (carried) + 9 + 3 = 13, put both 13 on the far left of the answer. (1 is in the thousands column and 3 is in the hundreds column)
So : 1,330 is the total.
When you stack, it is easier to see the values of each number position and where to carry the numbers to, it also helps to add the correct numbers together, since the numbers are in vertical columns. There is less possibility of adding the hundreds column to the tens column. Adding from left to right is the WRONG DIRECTION, because it goes you a WRONG ANSWER.
Our number system if based on 135.00 where 00 are the two places after the decimal, 5 is in the ones columns, 3 is in the tens column and 1 is in the 100s column.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sorry ,I got the numbers wrong:
Answer is: 1340. I accidentally wrote 334 instead of 344. but the concept is the same. Put the numbers vertically and line them up, then add right to left.
