Description
Locate your article on Africa. These news articles MUST be from reputable news sources. Do not choose a blog.
The news articles should be 30 days or newer.
- The news article can focus on any of these issues: the environment/climate, culinary arts, economics, literature, visual or performing arts, culture, media, history, health/disease, law/criminal justice, women, children/youth, politics, or education.
Once you select an article, to avoid duplication, post your article information to the discussion post related to the article number.
To post your article selection, go to the Discussions tab.
- Select the correct article number (article 1, article 2 or article 3).
Create a new thread.
- In the subject line, type the country name, comma, and article title.
- Save and post.
BE SURE TO READ WHAT ARTICLES YOUR CLASSMATES HAVE CHOSEN, PRIOR TO YOUR POSTING, TO AVOID A DOUBLE-POST ON THE SAME TOPIC/COUNTRY. For example, if your classmate posts about Sri Lanka and refugees, you should not post about this topic, even if from a different perspective.
- If a classmate has already posted on a particular country/topic, do not re-post on this topic/country for the rest of the semester.
- Duplicate posts will earn a zero.
- How to write the analysis:
- After reading the article, provide a 500-word analysis which includes:
- A synopsis of the article (who, what, when, where why)
Why you chose the article - a substantive reason (not because "I liked it" or it "attracted" you). Instead, you can say I was drawn to this article because, or this article interested me because…
- The article's relevance to the course. What does the article have to do with the study of Black people in the U.S.?
Describe why the article relates to the course itself - be very specific (site readings/films). Incorporate what you have learned in the course, thus far, into your article analysis. For example, this article relates to the course because…
- Explain your opinion on the issue in the article– no need to write I believe, I think, or I feel.
Begin your conclusion by articulating why the global 'we' should care. Why would someone in Sri Lanka, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or Wyoming care about the issue discussed in the article that you chose?
Your reason for why we should care is a persuasive argument. What would happen to the country, region, or world if the event in the article continues, spreads, or ends?
You must include two to three sentences on the regional (Africa, Europe, and/or Latin America), or global implications related to the event happening in the article.
Pay attention to your grammar and re-read, aloud [while looking in a mirror if you can], to ensure that your argument makes sense and that your grammar is correct.
