Strategies to Provide to Immigrant Students
According to Rodriguez, Blatz, and Elbaum, (2014), there are many strategies that teachers
or learning personnel can employ in providing the transition of education to immigrant children
with disabilities. The following strategies can be employed:
Involving Immigrants’ Parents and Relatives in the Teaching Process
Issues of inequality, stereotyping, discrimination and language barriers are among the
problems these students face. To minimize these issues, teachers can involve the immigrants’
parents by transitioning their knowledge to them. Teachers can welcome parents into their
teaching amenities, visit immigrants’ homes or welcome them in school, employ excelled
immigrants students in schools (Al-Hassan, & Gardner III, 2002).
Familiarizing Teachers with Immigrants’ Students Culture
In U.S, the majority of special needs teachers are of Euro- American descent (Rodriguez,
Blatz, & Elbaum, 2014). This creates a major barrier in delivering quality education to these
special needs students. Students tend to have a negative perception towards school personnel if
learning is not delivered in their home culture. Students will have a high attitude towards the
level of education provided to them when it is delivered by an educator from their ethnicity.
Teachers should read about other cultures, learn special education to help them use nonverbal
communication like gestures. School management should set up a special cultural celebrations
date and focus on special strategies for personal students’ needs.

School atmosphere may have a large variety of special needs students ranging from challenges
in mobility, hearing seeing etc. Provision of visual aids, hearing aids, and learning aids can help
overcome the barriers these students face (Gorski, 2015). The school should provide audiotapes,
videotapes, school phone system, web pages in their teaching platforms. Similarly, these learning
systems should be made available in multiple languages (families’ language).
