ok, let's set up the "X" form, there should be a straight line between 2x and 4; x and 1

2x        1

x          4

how do you set this up? :

factor 4=2*2 or 1*4 or 4*1 or -2*-2 or -1*-4 or -4*-1 (order here matters)

test:

ignore all the negative pairs because it is +9x

then eliminate 2, 2 pair because 2*2x+2*x=4x, not 9x

now we just left with 4,1 and 1,4 pair

put them like this:

2x    1                  2x    4

x      4                   x     1

do the cross multiplication, you will see that for the second one, 2x*1+4x=6x, not 9x

so 2x^2+9x+4=(2x+1)(x+4)

let me know if you have further questions
