Question description

Attachment Theory

Studying attachment theory is an excellent way to reflect on the nature-nurture controversy. Is a child’s attachment style a result of parenting (nurture) or is it a result of genetically influenced temperament (nature)? Each child is different. Some cry uncontrollably at the departure of a parent while others quickly adjust and show a secure attachment. Your course text defines attachment as an emotional tie with another person, shown in young children by their seeking closeness to the caregiver and showing distress on separation. While research indicates anxiety separation peaks around 13 months and gradually declines (Kagan, 1976), it is clear that your capacity to love and need love never ends, regardless of what side of the nature-nurture controversy you fall.

For this Discussion, reflect on attachment theory in the context of childcare. Determine the implications for sending a child to childcare instead of staying home with the child.
