In scientific notation, what is the sum of 2.3x10^-3 and 5.4x10^-4

Oct 17th, 2017

2.3×10–3 + 5.4×10–4 =      in the second number divide the first factor by 10 and multiply the second

                                          one by 10

2.3×10–3 + 0.54×10–3 =     use the Distributive Law and carry the factor 10–3 out

(2.3+0.54)×10–3 = 2.84×10–3

If the values are approximate, then we need to keep only two significant figures and the answer will be

 2.8×10–3.
