Farmer Joe has 800 yards of fencing to enclose a rectangular pasture. One side of the pasture borders on a river, and does not need to be fenced. If the width of the rectangle must be twice as long as the length (the side parallel to the river), what are the dimensions of the rectangular pasture?

Let the Length is x  yards then its width = 2x

fencing is required in 3 sides that is , x  +2x+2x = 800  or 5x = 800

hence x = 800/5 = 160 yards

Hence the dimensions are as follows

Length ( parallel to river ) = 160 yd

Width = 320 yd
