Besides the tendency to waste time, social networking sites can be quite harmful. In some companies (and even governmental agencies), internet usage has been severely restricted, as many employees were found to be engaging in social networking during working hours, leading to decreased production and efficiency among those employees. A collateral effect is that co-workers become disgruntled by observing such behaviors, leading to a decrease in overall morale. One of the major dangers of social networking is that it can lead to various forms of exploitation; criminals, scammers, and other predators can find ample opportunity to carry out their activities the danger is compounded by the fact that the population of social networkers includes young persons, many of whom are underage or simply naïve, and are at high risk for exploitation.
