Professionalism denotes a set of character strengths and personal values aimed at
bettering and providing high-quality services to others in the workplace. In the corrections field,
professionalism affects not only the officers and other staff working in those facilities but also
those imprisoned within these facilities and the families of both the workers and the prisoners,
the local community, and their relationships with the entire law enforcement community.
Professionalism in the correction facilities helps in maintaining calmness. This paper will focus
on the importance of professionalism in the field of corrections.
Increasing Professionalism in Corrections
The correction field has a huge and complex responsibility for public safety. Correction
staff, both in the correctional institutions and in the community, are charged with protecting the
public and, simultaneously, preparing the inmates under correctional control for successful, lawabiding lifestyles once they are released (Schiff & Leip, 2019). A high-quality workforce is thus
necessary for the corrections sector to operate at its best and produce the types of results that the
community expects. Several issues and needs that must be implemented to help build a quality
and professional workforce include, but are not limited to, the following. First off, staff
competencies should be enhanced. Currently, the corrections sector agonizes from low-level
professionalism, and performance measures must be developed to deal with this issue. The
competency standards for correctional positions should be based on staff conduct and
performance. To achieve this milestone, it will be significant that correctional directors
implement ethical training for their staff. Training on ethical conduct for correctional officers
sets high ethical standards. Refresher courses should be made available for officers to help them
overcome ethical lapses in their conduct. The corrections agency should insist on humane

treatment of inmates by the correctional staff and should work to ensure that their staff meets
these standards for better service delivery to the community.
Professionalism in the corrections workforce can also be improved by dealing with
organizational issues that affect the workforce's job satisfaction. For instance, inclusion criteria
in decision-making should be relooked to allow officers to participate. Programs such as
