Introduction
The book “The Underdogs” was first published in 1915 and it is Azuela’s most successful novel
addressing the life of a Mexican peasant who holds on to his vision and becomes a leader who
leads a revolution in Mexico. Azuela uses Demetrio as the protagonist who initiates a rebel
against the dictatorship in Mexico. Going against the government is a rather bold step, and it
requires both courage and bravery, but for Azuela he is able to present his ideas about a
government in the most truthful of ways.
Anything about the government can be a very sensitive topic to discuss, but for Azuela he finds
a stronghold that allows him to give out information about the dictatorship in the government.
Azuela successful illustrates the formation of a rebel group comprising of different people who
are ordinary citizens who want to see a new beginning. The underdogs present scenes of
revolution in human history and this is well accommodated by the author Azuela. Azuela is able
to evoke the element of courage in the reader, and this comes out quite well in the novel. For
