The importance of Accountability in the Military
Accountability can be defined simply as the readiness of an individual to take responsibility
for his or her actions. It is the act of doing good with or in the absence of supervision for the good
of an individual and the public. An individual also can factor in the feelings, desires and the safety
of others before undertaking any activity. Businesses, governments, and institutions all over the
world recognize the crucial role of having the accountable personnel and place much emphasis on
the need for their members to exhibit this. It is one of the most important principles of any
organization in the current environment due to the huge implications of the lack of it in any
working environment. It defines how resources and finances are to be used, and individuals know
the repercussion of not being accountable.
Accountability in the military structure is a very crucial virtue, and it plays a key role in
ensuring the military personnel dispenses their duties and responsibilities as per the set terms and
conditions of work. It is essentially the nerve center of every policy guiding the running of any
military all over the world. Accountability touches almost all aspects of the USA army, and it
encompasses matters concerning the reporting to work by soldiers and personnel, adhering to
dressing requirement’s and dealing well with the public regardless of the circumstance or situation.
It instills discipline on the soldiers, which is necessary in the dispensation of their vital
responsibility of maintaining order within and without their borders.
In the military life is depended on the ability to keep promises and commitments and
soldiers strive to live up to this. Soldiers are taught important values in training which guide them
in their duties; these values include; the need to think first before doing anything, the importance
of putting the team first, being clear on what one stands for, doing things right and the spreading
of consequences among unit members. Soldiers know the importance of playing their roles in each

unit to their best as the success of their unit is depended on the collective contribution of each unit
member. Doing it right safeguards the safety of the group and the mission and these values help
make soldiers accountable individuals.
Organizations also strive to instill these values among their workforce as they help to make
the employees more accountable. Employees come to realize the importance of finishing their
assignment on time and respecting the diversity and personality of others in the organization.
Teamwork exists in organizations, and as a result, the spreading of consequences of a team member
helps him or her to understand the implications of his actions to the wellbeing of the team. The
team member can understand the need of being accountable for his actions as they may impede
the team’s ability to deliver on time. The goals of the organization can only be realized when all
employees work cohesively and show readiness to take responsibility for their actions.
In the military being accountable is not merely a requirement but an obligation as soldiers
have a high level of regard and expectations accorded to them by the public and are expected to
conduct themselves in that regard. Just like in a family set up, members of the family are expected
to behave in a manner, which is apparent to their conscience, and to be ready to account for their
actions. For example, children are required to exhibit good behavior and to respect elders, and if a
child goes against that unwritten rule, he stands to face the wrath of his parents.
Punishing a child for disobedience is an act of making the child responsible for his action
and helps make the responsible child citizens. Also, in homes, jobs and chores are divided among
individuals in the homestead, and they are expected to be completed in time, and every member of
the family consciously expects the other to do his part unsupervised and with perfection. This is
an act made to institute responsibility and the willingness for one to take account of his actions
and the consequences of such if any.

For one to obtain a driving license, say, in Germany, he is required to undergo training to
be permitted to drive and must also pay a compulsory fee to be allowed to include his vehicle on
the road. Passing the numerous inspections by the state made to guarantee the safety of road users
and vehicles is also a test one must pass. Possessing a driving license does not necessarily mean
one can drive for his own pleasure. He must take into account the interests of other road users who
also must exhibit the same high standards of road usage requirements. With that in mind, drivers
in Germany take driving seriously considering the risks associated with driving on high-speed
roads. The drivers expect and know that the other users are responsible as they are and are ready
to be accountable for their actions and this helps reduce the risks that may arise due to reckless
driving.
The issue of accountability on the road is also taken seriously by many countries all over
the world, an...
