The major social problem affecting Texas is illegal immigration. According to estimations by the Department of Homeland Security, Texas has the highest number of undocumented immigrants in the United States. In 2009 there were was a total of 10.8 million illegal immigrants in America out of which 1.68 million were living in Texas. This high number of undocumented immigrants in Texas has caused various problems in this state. First, illegal immigration tends to strain the spending of government by overburdening health, social welfare and education programs. This problem is escalated by the fact that illegal immigrants do not pay taxes hence causing the government to lose millions of dollars in income tax revenue. Secondly, illegal immigrants result in reduced wages for the lower class workers and even make it hard for them to find jobs. This is because most illegal immigrants are willing to work for low pay than the residents of Texas. Third, illegal immigrants have caused criminal problems in Texas especially drug trafficking. The rationale for this widespread social problem is due to border security problems coupled with the fact that Texas has a strong economic growth and hence the immigrants tend to cross over to Texas for jobs and new employment. Most of the illegal immigrants in Texas, 62% come from Mexico since Texas has the most extensive belt of the border with Mexico border which is one of the world’s most continually crossed international borders. This means that security on the borders is not effective due to the longest stretch of Texas – Mexico and hence there are many loopholes that give immigrants opportunities to cross the border. With loopholes in the border security and the immigrants' search for employment in an economically strong country, the problem of illegal immigrants keeps on recurring.References References: Brown, L., Langenegger, J.
