UN Sustainable Development Goals and Environmental Sustainability
Environmental science can be controversial. It focuses on human activities and how
they influence the environment in complex and unexpected ways, considering various
environmental indicators that give insights into the present state of the environment.
Specifically, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 aim at
transforming the globe by 2030 to achieve environmental sustainability. The plan is
applicable in all countries, and it incorporates 17 objectives. However, the objectives have an
extension to the socioeconomic aspects of the society, and their interactions with the natural
environment; placing sustainability at the core. The SDGs include poverty in all its forms,
zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and
sanitation, affordable clean energy, and decent work and economic growth. Also, there is
industry, innovation, and infrastructure; responsible consumption and production; sustainable
cities and communities; responsible consumption; climate action; conservation of life below
water; promote ecosystems; peace, justice, and strong institutions; and partnerships for
sustainable development. UN reports on SDGs have shown a lack of collaborations around
the globe to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030; indicating that only Denmark,
Finland, and Sweden have achieved 75% of the UN goals. However, there is a continuous
spread of biases and attitudes toward the scientific development of sustainability to
specifically developed surveys.
Similarly, a report by Util, a financial technology organization based in London has
focused on sustainability ranking the top ten impactful investment funds for the achievement
of the 17 SDGs agenda. According to the report, the future of the UN SDGs is aligned with
the optimization of investment impact. In the publication ‘Impact Investment Leaders and
Laggards,’ Util highlights three primary findings on the element of SDGs and sustainable
investment (SDG Knowledge Hub, 2022). The Report’s argument on unbundling catchall

ideology of sustainable development calls for diversified conflicting objectives on the planet,
people, and prosperity. Util explains that industries, organizations, and investment funds
contribute positively or negatively to the achievement of some UN sustainable development
goals (SDG Knowledge Hub, 2022). However, the effects vary across the social, economic,
and environmental dimensions of the 2030SDGs. As a result, the quality of scientific
knowledge on sustainability is affected by the insertion of unconscious biases during new
reporting, and ultimately overestimation and underestimation of the impacts which cause
incorrect conclusions.
In another report, by UN Women on sustainable goals, more girls in Afghanistan have
joined schools, reducing their likelihood of engaging in early marriages and improving their
health and well-being. The source report that despite the great progress, approximately 49%
of the girls do not school in some regions, with another higher number dropping out due to
pregnancy, and economic reasons (UN Women, n.d). The women believe that their studies
are less prone to biases, and more concerned with achieving the Sdg’s sustainability targets.
In conclusion to their findings, the UN women recommend revision of school curricula and
policies that would counter gender discrimination and promote education, training, and
information technology. However, there could be other scientific research that would counter
and control the biases in the research on equality in education. Therefore, the conclusion is
education sustainability biases could originate unconsciously and necessitates external
measures to prevent them.
