In art, media refers to the material used the composer, designer or artists to create
their art work. There are numerous types of media that can be used to create art. These
media range from painting, drawings, sculpture, and photography, among others.
Paintings
In this type of art, media refers to the type of paint used as well as the base where
paint is applied. Paint’s medium, base or vehicle is what carries the colors.
Consistency of the paint can be controlled using pigments, solvents and other
substances. Traditionally, the following were used as paint media; acrylic paint, fresco,
encaustic paint, gesso, backlight paint, ink, oil paint, gouache, glaze, latex paint,
primer, magna paint, stencil, tempera, vitreous enamel, vinyl paint (it is actually
poisonous) just to name a few. Supports used for paintings include canvas, glass,
ceramics, architectural structures, human body (tattoos), wall, metal, paperboard,
vellum, wood and so on. Traditional methods and tools used for paintings include
sponge, action painting, cloth, aerosol paint, palette knife, stick, airbrush, paint roller,
batik etcetera.
