Answer the following questions in a minimum of 2 full pages (maximum of 5) using complete sentences in essay form. Give explanations WITH EXAMPLES to help describe all details.

DO NOT PROVIDE A SUMMARY OF THE STORY, WE’VE ALREADY SEEN IT. DO NOT REVIEW THE FILM. Time spent summarizing the plot of the movie will not help your grade. Instead, please respond to ALL the following questions in the form of an essay. (A simple way to do this is to make each set of questions, below, its own paragraph. Please don't include the question numbers in your paper.)

1. First, explain what is meant by mise-en-scène in film. Next, how is the mise-en-scène of this film used as a cinematic tool to help tell the narrative? Select a key scene in the film. Make note of the elements of design. Does it indicate things about the events and characters that go beyond any dialogue? Give examples from the film in which the director is trying to convey meaning through mise-en-scène. Make sure to discuss specifically the various elements of design, and how it is used in this film (setting, props, décor, lighting, costumes, makeup, hair).

2. Select a key scene in the film. Make note of the composition within the frame in key shots. Where are figures placed? Does it indicate things about the events and characters that go beyond any dialogue? What is the relationship among the figures in the foreground, middle ground, and background?

3. Does the film employ lots of camera movement? Very little camera movement? Describe how the use of a moving or still camera complements or detracts from the development of the narrative.

Mise-en-scene is defined as the technique in filmmaking that show that arrangement or
organization of the elements used to create the cinematic effects of the movie. Also, the
application of the technique highlights the effective application of collaborative methods and the
understanding of the production crew of the essence of the story and importance of its narration.
An additional way that this concept is used to ensure that the movie connects with the audience
according to the intention of the producers is its role in showing the use of costumes, lighting,
props including their timing and placement, and the cinematography (Lewis, 2013). Therefore,
the concept has become a tool for the analytical review of movies and films by experts to as a

and stage setting among others. In Do the Right Thing, the appropriate use of mise-en-scene can
be examined from its utilization in of the characterization, settings, props, and costumes to
convey the emotional and social messages associated with the problem of racial tensions in the
United States.

the song “Fight the Power” illustrated the intent of the character to wear the costume of a boxer
as she punches the air at every mention of the word “Fight the Power” in the song. A review of
the intention of the directors to begin the film with the scene shows that its central theme is
emotional anger and physical disturbance within the community. An additional method used by
the producers to portray the racial tension in the film was Mookie’s costume (Vest, 2014).
Viewers might consider the jersey of the Brooklyn Dodgers as a regular teen fashion trend but
the name of Jackie Robinson on it was to show the importance of African American inclusion in
the country’ major sporting leagues. Also, he was not just the first black man to play in the MLB

but the one to end segregation in the division. Therefore, Mookie’s costume made him one of the
film’s protagonists as he proved during the attempt of the angry mob to destroy Sal‘s pizzeria
after the death of Radio Raheem.
Secondly, a major but short scene that would be used for the analysis of the use of miseen-scene in this movie is the confrontation be...
