Team development is a necessary exercise to enable a team delivers on its mandate and
expectations. Most teams have between 3-12 members for proper operations. Teams normally
take various forms namely; single discipline or multi-disciplinary, temporary or a permanent,
technical or administrative, departmental or interdepartmental teams. Team development
undergoes five major steps namely; forming, storming, norming, performing and lastly
dissolution or reorienting. Forming the team is the first step in team development. This is when
team members get to know each other; they get aligned to the purpose why the team is being
formed and what is expected of the team. The second step is storming where team members
challenge each other as they set ground rules for engagement. The leadership and approach to the
leadership of the team are also challenged and agreed on whether the team is self- directed,
manager driven or team leader is selected from within. The third step in team building is
