The United States, like many other countries, have experienced a significant change in the socialeconomic conditions during the last decades. One of these changes is the emergence of low-service sector
employment. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss some of the elements that might explain the
formation of low-service sector employment and the predominant makeup of Latinx immigrants to such
laboring populations.
An important economic process that characterizes the modern economy is the development of
low-service employment. Another important process is immigration. The second half of the 20th century
experienced an unprecedented period of mass immigration worldwide. While Western Europe mostly
received immigrants from Southern Europe and North Africa (and later from Eastern Europe), United
