How can you determine the period of rotation of an asteroid from its light curve?

Apr 23rd, 2015
Asteroids rotate, the cross-section of the visible and illuminated part of their surface varies with time and so varies their brightness. This brightness variation is called a lightcurve. By measuring lightcurves, we can measure asteroid rotation periods

It is 2 dimensional representation of  luminosity vs time for an asteroid.
Using the best fit curve the rotation of the asteroid can be calculated.
