When rating elevator capacity, it is common to use a 25% safety factor, so an elevator should be able to carry 125% of the rated limit. So if an elevator is rated at 2500 lbs. and 16 male passengers get in the elevator, with a mean weight of 195.3 lbs. what is the probability that the elevator is truly overloaded? ( mean weight of all males is 182.9 lbs with a standard deviation of 40.8)

Calculate z = x-mue/ sigma = 195.3-182.9 / 40.8

                  = 0.3

So with z= 0.3,   p= 0.62 when elevator is not overloaded.

Therefore p= 1-0.62 = 0.38 when the elevator is overloaded.

Answer: p = 0.38
