Many black women in this time period may have backed down after being forced to submission by their men and in this particular case Delia treated his wife inhumanely.

 Slavery in particular in this novel forces women to fade into the shadow of their men. 

She in particular thinks women should stand up for their rights especially when bogged down by men.
