Please answer each question briefly (3-5 sentences). Each question is worth 10 points.
1. Ariel sees an e-book reader on the porch of Bryan’s house, takes the reader to her home, and

runs away with it. Edwin breaks into Fiona’s apartment, takes a laptop, and leaves. Greta sells Hazel
an expensive wristwatch for a fraction of its value, admitting that the watch is stolen property but
claiming that she is not the thief.
Which of these acts are crimes, and what are the differences among them?
Ariel committed a crime by stealing the e-book from Bryan, but telling people it was hers is
not a crime. Carl committed a crime by threatening Danielle’s life with a knife and by stealing from
her. Edwin also commits a crime by breaking and entering, and stealing from Fiona. Greta would not
have committed a crime if she did not know the watch was stolen, but because she knew it was then
this is a crime. The difference between these thievery crimes is that some of them are forceful, one
is only stealing, and the other is not thievery.
