Im sorry I put a picture and I guess it didn't go through! Here is the question:

"I put an unknown acid or base in water. The Molarity of the hydronium ions is 1.0 x 10 ^-3. Answer the next four questions.

25. Was the unknown an acid or a base?

26. How do you know?

27. What is the molarity of the hydroxide ions?

28. What number would this unknown be on the pH scale?"

The formula to figure out pH is

pH  = -log (H3O+)

so the pH  = -log(1 * 10^-3) = 3

pH<7 means that it is acid.

So 25. the unknown is  acid , 26.we know this because of pH calculated from concentration of hydronium ions and pH is < 7

27. to find the molarity of hydroxide ions we use formula Kw =[H3O+][HO-] = 1.0*10^-14

[HO-] = 1.0*10^-14 / 1.0*10^-3 = 1.0 *10^-11

28. pH = 3 and this is acid.
